TO GROW IN CHRIST LUKE 4:1-13

Posted: 3/9/2014

OPENING THOUGHT

The devil tried to make Jesus do wrong things. But Jesus never gave in and he did not stop obeying God. We find out how to stop the devil from making us do wrong things.

PRAYER: Ask God to help you to understand what you are reading. Then you can learn more about Jesus.

Read Luke 4:1-13

1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan & was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days & at the end of them he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’ “5 The devil led him up to a high place & showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority & splendor, for it has been given to me & I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”   8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God & serve him only.’ “ 9 The devil led him to Jerusalem & had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; 11 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” 12 Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ “ 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Verse 1 - Who filled Jesus when he returned from the Jordan River? Where did the *Holy Spirit lead Jesus?

Verse 2 - Why did the *Holy Spirit lead Jesus into the desert? How long was Jesus in the desert without food?

Verse 3 - What was the first wrong thing that the devil tried to make Jesus do?

Verse 4 - How did Jesus answer the devil?

Verse 5 - What did the devil show Jesus when the devil came to him for the second time?

Verse 6 - What did the devil offer Jesus?

Verse 7 - What did Jesus have to do to gain all the *kingdoms of the world?

Verse 8 - Who did Jesus say that we should worship? Should we worship and serve anyone or anything else?

Verse 9 - Where did the devil lead Jesus when the devil tried to make him do wrong the third time? What doubt did the devil suggest to Jesus about himself?

Verses 10 & 11 - What truth about God was the devil trying to make Jesus test? Why do you think that the devil said words that are from the Bible?

Verse 12 - How did Jesus answer the devil this third time?

Verse 13 - Did the devil tempt Jesus again?

FINAL REMARKS

Jesus had not eaten for 40 days and so he was hungry. Then the devil came to him. But Jesus still had the strength not to give in to the devil. Jesus was filled with the *Holy Spirit. And he knew what God had said in the *Old Testament. The same is true for us. We need to be full every day with the Spirit of God. And we need to know what God says in the Bible. Then we too can avoid doing wrong things.

PRAYER: Lord, we too know that it is wrong to worship and serve other gods. Please give us the strength to oppose the devil and to serve only you. Amen.
